St. Paul, Minnesota (September 18, 2006)—Two aging eastside St. Paul homes—each with a laundry list of overdue repairs—are back in tip-top shape thanks to the combined efforts of 115 hardworking employee volunteers from Donaldson Company, Inc. and the Twin Cities chapter of Rebuilding Together™.
To kick off its annual United Way campaign, Donaldson volunteers worked from dawn to dusk on Friday, Sept. 15, to spruce up homes on St. Paul's east side owned by a single mother of two and an elderly widow who has lived in her home for 57 years. Between the two houses, the volunteers repaired roofs and dilapidated front porches, painted inside and out, replaced rotting windows, repaired leaky plumbing and basements, and installed safety railings and new carpet and kitchen appliances.
"Everyone deserves a warm, safe place to call home, and helping provide that for these two families is one way Donaldson and our employees can give back to the communities where we live and work," said Becky Cahn, Corporate Communications manager at Donaldson. "It's so rewarding to experience the total transformation of these homes and the gratitude expressed by the homeowners and their families at the end of the day. It was a fabulous experience."
The home rehabilitation effort was coordinated by the Twin Cities chapter of Rebuilding Together, a national organization founded to assure that low-income homeowners, from the elderly and disabled to families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence.
"Rebuilding Together brings together the necessary resources, tools and supplies while companies like Donaldson provide the people power to get the job done," says Kathy Greiner, executive director of Rebuilding Together Twin Cities. "We're pleased that Donaldson has joined with us in what we hope will be the first of many joint housing rehabilitation projects."
