Late last year, popular voting online determined that three projects located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul would receive makeovers, thanks to the help of volunteers and HGTV partners. Project Week was from April 26th to May 3th.
Early efforts to get things started. (Left) Excavation at the Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy started the week of April 21st. (Right) Siding repairs on the Nelson home set the stage for complete house painting, which will happen during the week of April 28th.
Saturday, April 26th: (Left) Despite the surprising late-April wintery weather, volunteers bundled up and mulched trees in the Oak Woodland at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary. (Right) At the Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy, a group of volunteers did the ground work to start the creation of a badminton court.
Monday, April 28th: (Left) Nate from Parks & Recreation taught volunteers about planting native Oak trees at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary. (Right) Volunteers prepare the exterior of the Nelson home for painting to take place later this week.
Tuesday, April 29th: (Left) A volunteer continues to prep a side of the Nelson's Victorian house before it is painted. (Right) Two volunteers start to lay the foundation of what will eventually be a new plaza at the Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy.
Wednesday, April 30th: (Left) During a bright sunny day—perfect weather for working outside—a volunteer from Toro helps out with the planting of trees and the spreading of mulch at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary. (Right) Two volunteers at the Nelson home perform repairs on the siding, while work in the home's interior is underway.
Thursday, May 1st: (Left) At the Wilder Recreation Center, volunteers installed outdoor fitness equipment. (Right) Meanwhile, a volunteer planted shrubs in the new Wilder Recreation Center plaza.
Friday, May 2nd: Cancelled due to stormy weather conditions.
Saturday, May 3rd: (Left) Volunteers worked on the inside of the Nelson Home. (Right) Volunteers planted a Burr Oak, which was the final tree to be planted at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary during Project Week.

About the Projects
Home of Kris and Tom Nelson
After her husband passed away 18 months ago, Kris Nelson’s dreams of restoring their three-story Victorian home were put on hold. She and her two sons hope to be able to complete their home with a helping hand from HGTV, Rebuilding Together and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Resources Defense Council.
Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy
School administrators at City Academy teach their students the importance of giving back to the community through volunteering and caring for the environment. But without a much-needed facelift, the growth of the school and neighboring community center is stunted by space and environmental limitations.
Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary
A former rail yard, the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary is a 27-acre natural area that provides a habitat for several varieties of flora and fauna indigenous to St. Paul. Gradual restoration of the natural space and investigation and interpretation of the site’s historic resources will help improve the sanctuary.
